Strengthening Governance for Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy in the Asia Pacific

APLN Policy Brief 20

The following is a summary. Click on the adjacent link to download the full brief.

The Asia Pacific region is the world’s main area of growth for nuclear power. All of the key issues relating to peaceful use – non-proliferation, nuclear security, and safety – are highly relevant to this region. In all these areas, nuclear governance requires strengthening. In particular, appropriate mechanisms are needed to facilitate and enable high-level consultation, assurance, transparency, and collaboration in developing and propagating best practices. It should be the region’s priority to increase regional participation in major treaties.
