Co-chair of ICAN Australia (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons); Vice-President of the Medical Association for Prevention of War
Margie Beavis is a former GP who teaches at Melbourne and Deakin Universities. Currently Vice-President of the Medical Association for Prevention of War, co-chair of ICAN Australia (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons), and convenor of Quit Nukes, a campaign to encourage nuclear weapons free finance.
MAPW works to promote peace and disarmament. MAPW aims to reduce the physical and psychological impact, as well as environmental effect of wars. MAPW founded ICAN in 2006, and it has grown into a coalition of civil society organisations in over 100 countries, working for a world free of nuclear weapons. In 2017 ICAN was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “drawing attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons” and “ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty”. Margie was at the UN during the TPNW negotiations, and in Oslo for the Peace Prize celebrations. She has spoken at the UN at a side event regarding the proliferation risks associated with Australia’s proposed acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines.
