Knowledge Exchange Associate of the One Ocean Hub at the University of Strathclyde
Senia Febrica graduated with a PhD in Politics from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. Her research expertise focuses on maritime security conflict and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region (paying special attention to Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines interactions with extra-regional powers such as China, Japan, and the United States). Drawing from her research she has contributed to the co-development process of Fiji’s first national ocean policy, particularly its security pillar. Her research has also contributed to the 1.5 track dialogue on security in the South China Sea convened by the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the development of the Addendum to the New York Memorandum on Good Practices for Interdicting Terrorist Travel 2021, led by the United States Department of State. The UN recently appointed her as a member of the UN Pool of Experts for the World Ocean Assessment III (UN Regular Process) with a special focus on illegal activity and maritime security. She has written three books, six articles in reputable journals, ten chapters in edited volumes, 80 blogposts and over 20 written submissions and policy briefs on ocean affairs. She was involved in the co-development of high-level outputs for UN bodies such as policy and legal diagnostic tool and e-learning course/pathway. She is available to give talks and interviews on topics related to piracy, armed robbery against ships, maritime terrorism, and illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.
